- WinZip for Windows/NT BETA TEST VERSION #2

-
- Welcome to the pre-release version of WinZip for Windows/NT! This
- version is functionally equivalent to the 16 bit version, but
- because it is a native Win32 application it does not run into the
- incompatibilities in Windows/NT's Windows emulation, multi-tasks
- better, and is faster than the 16 bit version (in particular unzip
- operations are noticeably faster).
-
- This version has two fixes to the 8-Apr-94 beta, most notably a
- workaround for an apparent bug in Windows/NT 3.5 build 612 beta.
- See the WHATSNEW.TXT file for details.
-
- Requirements:
-
- This version of WinZip requires Windows/NT. You can also run this
- version if you have Win32s installed, however, Win32s is not
- distributed as part of the pre-release package because the files
- take over a megabyte of disk space. Note that Win32s is _not_
- part of Windows for Workgroups. Win32s is a separate operating
- system extension that allows some Win32 applications to run under
- Windows 3.1.
-
- Notes:
-
- - Since the Win16 and the Win32 versions look almost identical I
- temporarily put an asterisk in the title bar of the Win32
- version to make it easier to determine which version is running.
-
- - This version of WinZip always uses the short 8.3 format of any
- long filename you pass to it. Long filename support will be
- implemented in a future release.
-
- Known Problems Under Win32s 1.15:
-
- - Due to bugs in Win32s you may not be able to work with filenames
- and directory names containing characters above ascii 127.
-
- - Drag and drop from the 32-bit WinZip under Win32s to a Norton
- Desktop "desktop item icon" does not work. Drag and drop to
- other applications (e.g. a running copy of Notepad) works fine.
-
- - Norton Utilities 8.0 installs symevnt.386 in your system.ini
- which can cause problems for WinZip. On a Windows for
- Workgroups 3.11 system with 32-bit File Access enabled it
- prevents a Win32 program from changing the current drive and
- results in the WinZip message Could not change to d:\directory.
-
- - Old versions of Win32s (prior to version 1.15 dated 4/15/94) can
- cause WinZip (and other Win32s applications) to fail. Win32s
- 1.15 is available for download from CompuServe as WIN32S.ZIP in
- the WUGNET forum.
-
- Known Problems Under Windows/NT:
-
- - There are some anomalies in how the the Add dialog box handles
- long filenames and files with blanks. Note that the Add dialog
- box is based on the standard Windows "multi-select" open dialog
- box, so this behavior is common to _all_ applicationsthat use
- this common dialog box. The dialog box shows the short form of
- long NTFS filenames with blanks, but does not list 8.3 files
- with blanks (e.g. the filename "nico mak computing.txt" is
- listed as "nicoma~1.txt" while the filename "nico mak.txt" isnot
- shown at all) . HPFS filenames with blanks are never shown.
-
- - Some of the 16-bit Windows virus scanners listed in the Program
- Location dialog box do not work or are not available under
- Windows/NT.
-
- Comments, suggestions, and questions are welcome. Please let me know
- right away if you find any bugs by sending email to 70056,241 on
- CompuServe or Internet mail to 70056.241@compuserve.com.
